No one told you Budapest was this beautiful

Before I went to Budapest I had no idea what to expect.

Most people I told I was going to Budapest responded with a look of confusion, asking where it was and subsequently why I would go there.

Why not?

Certainly what I was not told was just how beautiful Budapest is. The capital of Hungary seems to have been forgotten by tourism and much of Europe overlooks this as a quality tourism destination. But Budapest has so much to offer travellers. First of all its ridiculously cheap, filled with history at every turn of the corner, and the Hungarian people are very welcoming and warm. But perhaps those who have been to Budapest do enjoy it as much as I did (now on four occasions) but instead choose to keep it a secret. Here’s why no one told you Budapest was this beautiful in pictures…

With the next city guide announced – Budapest – we couldn’t help but to give you a short introduction to the city that we have previously dubbed one of the most underrated cities in all of Europe. If you haven’t heard about BudapestΒ before, there’s a good reason those who have visited would like to keep it a secret. So without further introduction, here’s why no one told you Budapest was this beautiful…

I like Budapest too. Especially Fisherman Bastion, it’s really beautiful! I like the river cruise along Danube river at night too. The lights at Parliament House is amazing. The Hungarian folklore dance is something new to me as well. I would love to visit this city again!

Budapest is certainly a great place and has a lot to offer for tourists, as on a historical point a view as on a culinary one ! Did you try the cakes ?

I come from Belgium, I moved to Budapest for work a few months ago, it was the first time I came to Budapest and indeed I didn’t expect the city to be so beautiful. But in Belgium, Budapest is quite well-known. I would say that it is one of the most famous destinations of the Central and Eastern Europe, after Prague and Vienna. Trouble is, Central and Eastern Europe are not famous destinations for people outside of Europe, I think. When I hear/listen to/read non-European people talking about Europe, they mostly talk about France (Paris !), Spain and Italy. Which are three gorgeous countries of course, but Europe has so much more to offer :).

Like you I am taking a year to travel around the world by myself, and I just visited Budapest ad thought it was INCREDIBLE. I’ve found that although I like a lot of places for a lot of reasons, my absolute favorite cities are those that I fall instantly and hopelessly in love with for reasons I can’t explain, and that’s definitely what happened with Budapest. I imagine the city is what would happen if New York and Paris had a baby and actually decided to parent and gave the kid all their best traits. Wherever you go in this city there’s something unexpectedly awesome: one second, you’re on a tiny, irregular, and almost psychotic street that takes after the Marais, and then the next block you bump into a row of stores and cafes that make it seem like the West Village up and moved. Needless to say, I love it (I wrote a few posts on it here: or
