Now more than ever, people are travelling to more countries, more often. And it shows no sign of stopping any time soon. Travelling to foreign countries is now more affordable than ever, so what are you waiting for! Whether you want to follow the crowds or know where to avoid them, here are the top 10 most visited countries according to the World Tourism Organization.

10. Thailand

What has Thailand got to offer visitors? Only the most delightfully happy natives you’ll find around the world, fantastic Thai food, cheap accommodation, food, shopping, everything! Oh and then there’s that small fact that it is home to some of the most gorgeous beaches, islands, and some fantastic world-class resorts.

9. Russia

Head to the East of Europe and you won’t regret it. While the West of Europe if your more typical European getaway, the East has plenty to offer tourists by way of history, culture, and phenomenal architecture. If you’re off to Russia for your first time, be sure to visit both the capital, Moscow and the former capital, St Petersburg, as both have much to offer visitors. If you’re visiting for the first time, be sure to check out this quick guide for first timers.

8.  United Kingdom

Well it comes as no surprise to see the United Kingdom in the top 10, especially given London is the world’s most visited city. Should you be starting an English adventure here or just passing through the iconic city, here are some tips to help you get a grip on London before you go.

7. Germany

Deutschland! Truly in every sense of the phrase, Germany has a lot to offer visitors. From the cosmopolitan and quirky capital of Berlin, through to the more refined and sophisticated Munich and surrounds in the South. There are enough small German towns to keep you entertained for weeks if not months, and each and every nook of the country feels different to the next. Come during the festive season to experience the famous Christmas Markets in Nuremberg – you won’t regret it!

Grand Bazaar Istanbul

6. Turkey

It might surprise you that Turkey has beat quite a few other countries to take the position of #6 on the list, but for Europeans, it probably doesn’t come as a surprise. Turkey has so much to offer visitors – especially if you make it out of tourist-heavy Istanbul (though you can’t miss it – absolutely do not miss Istanbul – here’s why).

Rome if you want to

5. Italy

You could spend a life time discovering Italy, or perhaps more appropriately EATaly, and still have a lifetime left to discover. There’s so much history, culture, liveliness, FOOD – oh the food, coastal scenery, summer beaches… the list is endless. But if you still need convincing, here’s exactly why you will fall in love with Italy.

Great Wall of China day trip

4. China

The East has really opened its’ doors to tourism in recent years – though it still isn’t the easiest of entry procedures. If you have the patience to obtain a visa and the many other ways patience is required when visiting China, then you’re in for a real treat. Hong Kong and Macau also fare well with international visitors, and are a great little add-on to your Eastern adventure.

3. Spain

Spain is another country that you could travel throughout far and wide, and still never feel as if you have seen it all. Barcelona is a traveller’s favourite, but there are many lesser known towns, villages and small cities flying under the radar… so its’ little wonder Spain takes #3 on the list.

San Francisco

2. United States of America

Surprise Surprise… of course the USA nearly tops the list! The USA has so much to offer and with very different experiences in each state, the opportunities are endless. Need help knowing where to start? Here’s a guide to help you decide where to go road tripping in the USA!

beaune france

1. France

It shouldn’t surprise you that the effortlessly gorgeous, charming, and the only thing cooler than being cool – France – tops the list for the most visited country in the world. While Paris has a lot to offer travellers (and should certainly be visited at least once in your life), there’s so much to see beyond the capital.

I wonder where Australia features on this list.

That being said – It is very far away from the rest of the world.

This list pretty much makes sense to me. I’m from the USA though so I’d much rather go somewhere else. I stayed in Australia for an extended trip that lasted several months and I would certainly add that to the list instead.

I had a feeling France would be #1, but I’m so surprised Australia wasn’t on the list! I’ve been to 6 out of 10, but still need to visit China, Turkey, Russia, and Thailand. I’m definitely planning to check those off within the next few years 🙂

I was surprised by the order of some of the countries on the list as well. I’m from the U.S. (although I currently live in Europe) and forget what a popular tourist destination it is for my European friends. I think they’ve seen more of the country than I have 🙂

I am surprised at the list for some reason. Also, I wonder why India or any country in Africa did not make it. 🙂

    May 19, 2015 at 3:51 am

I’ve been to half of these countries! I’d better get travelling!

    May 19, 2015 at 3:40 am

4 out of 10, I’m not even half way there! So many places to visit but so little time and money 🙁

I feel like this list makes a lot of sense, especially considering that it’s mostly Western European countries on this list. So sad that there are NO South American countries on this list…and a little surprising considering that there are countries like Peru and Brazil that seem so popular and have so many great things to offer.

    May 18, 2015 at 11:31 pm

Those all sound like great places to visit. Although, I must say I was QUITE SURPRISED at the order of the countries. I expected UK to take a higher rank. Very interesting.

    May 18, 2015 at 10:59 pm

I’ve been to all of these countries except Russia. Like others, I’m a bit surprised to see it on the list. I would love to go but the visa process is so difficult for Americans.

    May 18, 2015 at 10:41 pm

Interesting list, I was surprised to see Russia on the list, it’s such an interesting place to visit though!

I have to agree with some of the other comments, I’m really suprised to see Russia on the list. But I guess it is “visited”, which doesn’t necessarily mean they are “tourists” or “travellers” when they visit. If you factor in all the “business” vistors, I guess I shouldn’t be so suprised that Russia is on the list.
    Very interesting post.

I liked this website. However I am surprised that top tourist destinations in India does not figure in your lists.

There are fantastic tourist destinations in India.

I’m so surprised that Russia is up there! Looking at the list every destination may be popular with tourists, but that doesn’t take away from the incredibly rich cultural experience you can have in every single one of these countries that is just waiting to be discovered x

    May 18, 2015 at 8:13 am

I’m surprised to find Turkey and Russia on the list actually. So many people visit western Europe, but there are a lot of great countries in Western Europe. Glad they are getting the recognition they deserve!

    May 18, 2015 at 7:13 am

Great list! Although I thought that Turkey or Thailand would be on the first place! 🙂

I would have thought the same thing, the amount of people visiting Bankok and Istanbul alone is crazy. But it turns out that Paris is the most visited city in the world.

    May 18, 2015 at 7:07 am

Yay, no surprise that France was number one! I love this country so much 🙂 No surprise for the US either, but I was a bit shocked to see Germany killing it at number 7! I love it so much, and I’m glad that it’s a lot more appreciated around the world than I thought it was 😀
