If you’re not from the UK you may not have heard about this little tradition we have over here called a Sunday roast. I say this because my Americans flat mate didn’t, so I thought I should offer up a little description just in case. A Sunday roast was traditionally an occasion to get all the family together to enjoy a roasted piece of meat whether that be chicken, beef, lamb etc. served up with their respective accompaniments whether that be roasted potatoes, yorkshire puddings or some veggies. It’s not a regimented tradition as such but most families will tend to do a Sunday lunch or dinner of some kind if they’re all around. It’s a really nice tradition to have and the food is delicious! Needless to say restaurants have clocked onto this and also offer a Sunday roast as an enticement every week, so I thought why not firstly share this tradition with you if you didn’t know about it already, and secondly tell you where to find a really great Sunday roast here in London! So here’s our guide to the best Sunday roasts in London. Enjoy!
1. Sam’s Brasserie
Located in Chiswick, Sam’s Brasserie is top of my list for anyone looking for a great Sunday roast in West London. They have a different choice of meats, fantastic Yorkshire puddings and delicious gravy. All produce is fresh and sourced organically and as locally as possible, making all the food even better quality. If you’re lucky they’ll also have the sticky toffee pudding on the menu, it’s probably one of the best in London and I have tried and tested a fair few! The roasts are also reasonably priced by London standards and you should definitely head to Sam’s if you’re in search of a Sunday roast out West!
The Smokehouse now has a couple of locations round London including the original in Islington and a new branch recently opened in Chiswick. The Smokehouse sources high quality meat from small family run farms, as locally as possible. The quality of the meat as well as the deliciousness of the food makes this place an obvious choice for a Sunday roast. If you have a little room for dessert be sure to order their toasted Banana bread topped with caramelised banana and Dulce de Leche, if you’re not already drooling you will be by the time you see it approaching your table!
Borough Market is a foodie’s heaven on the weekend, if you head there on a Saturday you can wander round trying all manner of delicious produce and maybe even picking up some food to take home too! In the heart of the market lies Roast, a beautiful restaurants overlooking the market. As the name may give away they specialise in roast meats and they do a damn good job of it too! Obviously this had to be included in my list of the best Sunday roasts in London as a result. Be sure to book ahead, it’s a very popular restaurant and you don’t want to miss this one!
4. The Harwood Arms
You’ll find the Harwood Arms hidden in Fulham, they make the best roast in the area and source the very best of British produce to do so. The interior is an upmarket pub-bistro vibe with wooden flooring and tables, it provides a perfect setting for a relaxed Sunday lunch fuelled with delicious food. A little personal recommendation for your desert is the millionaire shortbread, it’s quite incredible, if you could get this as a take out I would definitely be a couple of dress sizes larger! Beautiful restaurant and divine food, add it to your lists!
5. The Orange
Located on Pimlico Road in Chelsea, The Orange offers a wide range of lunch options including a cracking roast on Sunday’s. The restaurant is light and airy with wooden floors and tables. As well as delicious food they also have a great wine list and yummy cocktails if that’s more up your street! The upstairs restaurant is where you want to be and book on a Sunday. You’ll be treated to delicious food, drinks and a lovely atmosphere. Make sure you book your spot, I wouldn’t want you arriving and not being able to enjoy this gorgeous restaurant! The restaurant lends itself well to big groups, so book a table for your whole family or a big group of friends and go and enjoy the delights that await you there.
Hawksmoor has a number of restaurants around London now including Spitalfields and Covent Garden. These guys are well renowned for having some of the best steak in London which made it an obvious choice when deciding on a list of the best roast dinners in London. The quality and deliciousness of their meat is proven by how busy all of their restaurants are so on that note be sure to book your spot as far in advance as possible so you don’t miss out on the delights that await you.
7. The Albion
Located in Islington The Albion should most definitely be top of of your lists when deciding on a Sunday roast, you can’t get much more quintessentially British than the Georgian building and interiors that this restaurant boasts. They’re also renowned for the quality of their produce and roasts. The vibe is cosy but chic, they’ve nailed the decor and in the winter there’s a roaring wood fire to welcome you in from the cold. High quality meat, impeccable taste and wonderful service, it’s the perfect place to spend a relaxing Sunday afternoon, especially in Winter.
8. Dean Street Townhouse
Located in the heart of Soho, Dean Street Townhouse is a member of the Soho House clan, except unlike the members clubs this restaurant is open to the public. They put on a mighty fine spread on a Sunday and their roast is divine. Personal tip: If you’re able to stifle a couple of Yorkshire puddings, I’d highly recommend it, they do really fantastic ones here. The roast is also fairly reasonably priced and the restaurant is buzzing throughout the day with various media types, be sure to check them out if you’re in search of a hearty Sunday lunch in the area and also make sure you book ahead!
The Boundary is found on a rooftop in Shoreditch, they have both indoor and outdoor seating areas making it the perfect location to head to on a sunny Sunday afternoon. Not only is the design of the restaurant exquisite but the food parallels it. I highly recommend a Sunday lunch here, whilst the prices are a verging a little more to the expensive end of the spectrum, the view more than makes up for it! Add it to your list!
10. The Duke of Wellington
A traditional British pub with a few quirky interiors and a cracking roast dinner. The Duke of Wellington is located in the heart of Ladbroke Grove on Portobello road, making it the perfect post or pre-market destination. Whilst the location is great, the food is even better. The quality of the meat here makes a roast dinner even more delicious and if you’re in search of a proper English pub lunch but with high quality, delicious food then you should definitely check these guys out.
