Vienna is an absolute mecca for coffee lovers as the kaffeehäuser (coffee house) scene is alive and thriving, as it always has been. Over the years some of the world’s top politicians and notable icons in fashion and film have graced the classic coffee houses, while today they retain their elegance and charisma with ease. With that, here’s a quick guide to Vienna’s coffee houses!

Cafe-schwarzenberg

The Art of the Viennese Kaffeehaus

It is also important to note that there is a certain art to attending a coffee house – that which could be described as a disregard for time. The idea is that the patron ‘rents’ that table space by ordering a coffee and is not only entitled but welcome to stay for as long as they please. By all means you’d be welcome to stay all day after ordering just one coffee!

Classic Vienna Coffee Houses

Café Sacher

For a grand affair, it doesn’t get much more opulent than Café Sacher, home to the famous Sacher-Torte (a rich chocolate cake with apricot jam – deeeeelicious).

Location: Philharmonikerstrasse 4

Café Sperl

Famous for its Sperl torte, this particular coffee house has a bit of a grungier speakeasy vibe, making it great for a classic with a twist.

Location: Gumpendorferstrasse 11

Demel

Demel is one of my favourite coffee houses for its extravagant selection of sweet treats and delicious hot chocolate with whipped cream. Be sure to try the Demeltorte – their specialty which rivals the Sachertorte!

Location: Kohlmarkt 14

Aida

If you’re after a perfect place to kick back and people watch, Aida is located right near the Stephensdom Cathedral and overlooks the busy shopping street below, Kärntner Strasse.

Location: Singerstrasse 1.

Café Central

The famous Café Central is another popular icon and perhaps the most well known. With that comes the typical wait times (and to be honest, it is a little overly touristy nowadays), but a great choice if you’re looking for the quintessential pick of the bunch!

Location: Herrengasse 14

Coffee Houses for Something a Little Different

Café Rüdigerhof

This is a great choice for a cheaper, more localised experience.

Location: Hamburgerstrasse 20

Café Diglas

Another classic with live piano music on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 8pm through til 11pm.

Location: Wollzeile 10

Café Landtmann

Another classic that has been particularly popular among celebrities over the years.

Location: Universitätsring 4

Aida is on every corner in Vienna with it’s weird pink interior design… It’s definitely NOT on a must-visit-list.

But maybe you should try Café Hawelka (Dorotheergasse 6; 1. Bezirk) and ask for Melange and Buchtl or Café Ritter (Mariahilfer Str. 73; 6. Bezirk) and order a “Mohr im Hemd mit Vanilleeis und Schlagobers” with coffee.
Those are very much with typical Wiener spirit.

    Don t fall into the hands of scams trying to get the blank ATM card on the internet. I came across so many comments of a blank ATM card worth’s millions, thus i doubted all this but there was this comment made by Lambert Harold including his email for confirmation regarding the card. I contacted Lambert and he told me everything and how he purchased the card from GREAT HACKERS. immediately i contacted the email address he gave me, atmhackersworldwide.atmcard@gmail..com}
    Few hours later i got a response and was told all the processing which i agreed willing to see the end. Three days later i received an email regarding my tracking number to my parcel and before i knew it, the CARD was delivered by the UPS courier service. I did not believe all this even when i was holding the ATM card, until i was able to withdraw the $7,000.00 he told me i can withdrew per day. Today i am a company owner with so many other properties, all thanks to GREAT HACKERS. I took time to make this comment to avoid anyone falling into the hands of scam, so i advice you never to contact any other ATM card seller expect this very man because he is for real. Contact him today via email{atmhackersworldwide.atmcard@gmail..com}

That’s a great list. However, there are loads of amazing coffee shops that are less ‘traditional’ like

    – Cafe Phil – http://phil.info/

It’s a cafe/bookshop/venue for gigs and readings. I love going there, because the interior is unique and I love the vibe.

    – Coffee Pirates – http://www.kaffeepiraten.at/

It’s close to my University, that’s why I go there a lot. The coffee is AMAZING and the interior is bright and beautiful and it’s a perfect place for students to work during the breaks.

    – Vollpension

Another really cool cafe is the ‘Vollpension’. It’s like visiting your grandma, getting freshly baked cake and delicious coffee. They even employ real ‘grandmas’ haha

Still not a full list, but these are 3 of my personal favourites 🙂

    Hey Brooke!

I’m a travelblogger from Vienna and my favorite coffee house is Café Central, because here I can be so creative, in middle of other authors or journalists. And also very cool is the Pure Living Bakery, which isn’t a typical viennese coffee house, but absolutely charming. By the way: Aida is not a single coffee house in Vienna, there are lot’s of them in every district.
    Greetings from Vienna <3 Victoria

    Gracias..
