When you wake up every morning and do what you love, meaning you love what you do, you are bound to feel as if you have never worked a day in your life. For Pro Surfer and GoPro ambassador Aritz Aranburu, this is indeed his every day reality. When I had a chance to catch up with Aritz for a quick chat immediately after the Vans Triple Crown had concluded on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii, I was eager to discover more about his life travelling the world following the waves, how he would encourage others to follow their passion, and his tips and tricks for capturing all those special moments on his GoPro camera. So, what does it feel like to have one of the best jobs in the world?

With a WCT rank of 26, Aritz Aranburu is certainly making his mark in the surfing world. At just 26 years of age, Aritz has a sporting career that allows him to travel the world with ease – making him an incredible inspiration for the WOW Stories features.

What is a typical work day as a Pro Surfer?

As a pro surfer we’re always ravelling away from home because it all depends on the waves. If the waves are not that great I will still do a bit of surfing, sometimes I do training as well… but surfing is my lifestyle. Normally Im surfing every day. Sometimes I like to go to places where there are no waves just to disconnect for a little bit… but thats a maximum of three or four days. By then my mind is always telling me to be close to the ocean.

It sounds like you’re travelling a lot! Where is home for you?

Home is in the Northern part of Spain, a city called Zarautz – its really close to St Sebastion. That’s where I grew up surfing and that is still my home base.

Do you have a favourite place in the world?

Of course I love travelling in Spain, but outside of Spain I love Tahiti, Hawaii, Mexico and every country in Africa. Particularly South Africa, Mozambique, Namibia, and Morocco.

What would be your advice for people looking to follow their passion?

“As you say, its a passion… you always have to keep it as a passion. When you stop having fun with it […] its not the right choice. Everything comes from passion first and you have to keep it that way.”

As an ambassador for GoPro you have some great photos & videos of your sport, what is your favourite mount to use to capture those special moments?

The GoPro mouth mount is my favourite, because when you use it in your mouth you allow people to see the same view that surfers have going into the barrel. Also I like to use the GoPro stick because its fun for selfies!

Do you use your GoPro for anything outside of surfing?

Nowadays I always have my GoPro in my pocket the whole time.  When you’re travelling around, there are always cool things to film to create memories – skateboarding, snowboarding, even riding a bike in the North Shore!

How do you think GoPro Cameras have changed sport photography?

When I was a kid I was hoping to have someone filming me. Nowadays you can record your surf and create great memories and the best part if that you don’t have to have anyone else there… it’s the ultimate selfie camera!

You’ve just wrapped up the Vans Triple Crown Event here on the North Shore. What are your thoughts on Hawaii!?

I love coming to the North Shore for the day by day life, the weather, food trucks, hiking, lots of different things! I also love Kuai as it feels more natural with less people around.

If youre looking for another surfer who uses a GoPro and actually travels the world posting daily vlogs of his travels, I highly recommend Mr Ben Brown’s Youtube channel. His vlogs have become a daily habit for me, he is the loveliest guy with the best friends and has a great life. Currently in Cape Town and road tripping with his kitted out Landy. His filming skills get better and better every day, search for his Visual Vibes videos too 🙂

They say surfing is such an amazing concept. You’re taking on Nature with a little stick and saying, ‘I’m gonna ride you!’ And a lot of times Nature says, ‘No you’re not! 🙂
