I recently asked WOW readers to submit their hand luggage questions via the World of Wanderlust App – here are your questions and my answers plus a bonus “Whats in My Bag” video to show you what is in my bag!

What do you pack in your hand luggage?

I recently filmed a video on my Youtube Channel which shows my favourite belongings that I carry everywhere – these few things are always with me as my hand luggage as its everything I need to keep me busy. My iPhone, Frends headphones and a good book are absolute necessities for wherever I travel. I’d also almost always have a bottle of water in my bag to stay hydrated.

What do you never leave home without?

My iPhone, my LifeProof case (lifesaver), my headphones, perfume (on and inside my bag), and my purse with some local currency.

Any advice for frequent flyers?

I’ve finally learned that ‘less is more’ and work with what I have rather than worry about anything I’ve forgotten to pack. I’m travelling so much that its nearly impossible to remember everything. I also love zip-lock bags, they’re a lifesaver for cosmetics and toiletries.

What kind of luggage do you use?

I recently upgraded to Samsonite luggage – a little more expensive but totally worth the investment. The quality of the bags is a necessity considering I’m on planes or trains every second day!

How early do you get to the airport?

Usually an hour and a half to two hours before the flight.

Do you eat in the lounge or before going to the airport?

I really really hate airport and airplane food… it all tastes so processed and lacks in any nutrition. I always try to eat before I go but find myself often scouring the airport last minute for a piece of fruit or fresh juice.

Any favorite airline?

Emirates – I’m working my way up their tier status programs which has even resulted in many unnecessary re-routes through Dubai. I don’t mind flying out of the way just to fly with them, they’re my preference by far.

Any plane etiquette tips?

No weird smells.

First impressions of Paris?

“Omg, that’s the Eiffel Tower…”

First impressions of London?

Men with British accents…….. (jaw dropped).

New York or LA?

New York!

One word to describe New York?

Ever had a bad experience in the air?

There have been a few…. one memorable one would be emergency landing in the middle of nowhere in Chile, followed by a wait, re-boarding the plane, and turning around to fly back to the origin. Then I stayed overnight in some random hotel before flying out to my destination the following day. Not speaking Spanish at this point was highly frustrating!

How often do you get sick if you are travelling 24/7?

My immune system is pretty good nowadays. I have been hospitalised once this year after being severely burnt out, and have been sick enough to go to the doctors and spend 3-4 days in bed a few other times. Considering I travel so much and have such a physically demanding schedule, I would say those are pretty good odds!

Name one amazing opportunity you have refused?

I turn down quite a lot of opportunities to be honest… usually due to scheduling conflicts. Next week I should be in Dubai but I had to politely decline – not that I’m complaining, I’ll be on a beach somewhere in Hawaii instead!

What would be your dream collaboration?

Not really a collaboration as such, but I’d love to see my own line of luggage or hats released. I have lots of ideas floating around!

Do you keep in touch with other bloggers or your ‘real friends’ more?

It’s a bit of both but I do tend to speak to my blogger friends more as I see them more now that I’m living in Europe away from my friends/family back home in Australia. But I’ll be home for New Years Celebrations and see everyone then – I’m really excited for that!

When did you feel as though you had made it in the blogging industry?

I get asked this question a lot and it kind of blows me away, just the question itself. I don’t think WOW is anywhere near its full potential, I’m really excited to see how far it grows in 2015 as there are some very exciting things planned – I can’t wait!

Goals for 2015?

Find a better routine in my crazy lifestyle by being able to be more active, eat better, and drink more water. I have really missed routine! My sleeping pattern is also way outta whack.

I think a luggage line is the way to go. I recently tested most of the carryons in Macys. It all started with a purchase that I used once on a trip and returned because the handle did not feel secure and when I leaned a little on it, it went down 1/2 inch…mmmmm…. so what will happen to it when I’m traveling the streets of Venice. I too wound up with samsonite after wheeling around all the carryons in the luggage department. I’m sure they thought I was nuts but I really didn’t care. Then I went home and ordered through my airline mileage with my airline card and received double points for it. PS – the samsonite luggage was the only one I tested with a secure handle.

I have an issue leaving my Iphone when I travel. It just makes me feel safe. I guess I feel that I can always call for help if I have my phone.

After working in the travel industry for many years, I put my career on standby a few years ago to have both my daughters and in the process I started writing a parent blog all about our lives together. Now they are getting a bit older, I am really keen in getting back out there and travelling, I have recently set up a collaborative family blog with three other ladies- – blogs like yours are so incredibly inspiring to me, while I know all about the parenting blog industry and the travel I have done through my parent blog, it is really exciting to read about someone living the travel dream. Loved this post as I am so nosey and love having a look in peoples bags! x

My friends who have been to Paris say the same thing about the Eiffel Tower too! I guess I’ll find out when I visit there in February. I really wish they had better foo available at the airport too. But sometimes it’s the only thing available especially when doing a layover.

I totally have to agree with you on the point if favorite airlines.
There i son airline that has a better service or nicer staff than Emirates does. Flying with them is always a pleasure and if I have the chance, I always choose them.

I love following you blog and admirer all the hard work you put into it.

At the same time you bewilder me from time to time. It might just be a generation ting, but to me it seems that you way of travelling is very expensive and hurried for a young person. Certainly not the way we traveled when I was young, but more alike to the way we travel later in life now that we have more money and less time.

Today is a case in point.

When I was your age and traveled the world I would keep ALL my belongings in my handluggage. Safe lot of time and trouble, in airports, and on local transportation and make it possible to walk.

Heck even today when I travel with three kids I will try to keep it down to handluggage for everyone. That way the kids are able to help out and we are flexible.

Another thing that baffle me is that you travel with so expensive items. I would never do that when I was young. It felt so much safer not to flash very expensive brands and it made it easier to get local prices and be part of the local life. Even today I will think about it. Wearing expensive subclasses can easily double your taxifare in some countries….

This is super handy!! Ah and I’ve had a similar bad experience in the air… Going in for the landing in St Barths back when I lived on the island, we once flew in on the tiny planes from St Marteen, only to have it circle the island, go for the landing and fly straight back up and head back! So scary!

Great post and video! I am very very excited for your luggage post. Mostly to see your luggage because I’m currently searching for my next set. Do you have soft or hard side? So far I think I might get the Travelor’s Choice Tasmania set. Anyone else have suggestions?

My Lifeproof case has definitely been a lifesaver for me as well… Whether I’m out kayaking, on a dive boat – or anywhere near the ocean, really – there’s been many a near miss or accidental drop where my Lifeproof has pulled through for my phone. Although my case is probably a bit worse for wear at this stage, I still think it’s the best protection for someone always on the go.

Love your blog, Brooke! You’re such an inspiration!

Emirates is definitely one of my favourite airlines, although I’d probably say Singapore Airlines is my all-time favourite! So jealous that you’re off to Hawaii next week too, that sounds perfect right now!

    November 21, 2014 at 9:46 am

I am so excited to fly with Emirates in three weeks time; I even decided to treat myself and get business class tickets, since that airlines is so AMAZING!

I cannot say that Samsonite suitcases are the best; i bought one earlier this year and it lasted me less than six months…I think its time to try other brands!

Ziplock bags are an essential for me too. But they’re so hard to find some places! I used to bring tons of them back from the US every time I went back. The TSA agents probably thought I was crazy because they would be stuffed into every spare crevice of my suitcase.
