Carry on luggage essentials

When a reader asked “If you could take just 10 things with you on your trips, what would they be?” I thought I best put together a collection of the top 10 Carry On Luggage items I’m loving right now and challenge myself to go with just 10 of the essentials. Here’s what I picked:

1. Rimowa Cabin Luggage

No one does luggage quite like Rimowa. If you want a suitcase that will last the extra mile (pun intended), consider making an investment in one of these bad boys. They come with a 5 year warranty which is plenty of travel time and the hard case ensures your belongings are well looked after.

2. ASOS Oversize Scarf

Ever been stuck on a plane quivering like a duckling in fresh water? Of course you have. Airlines love their air conditioning as much as you love birthday cake. Be sure to plan ahead and pack an oversized scarf to keep you warm (& stylish) on board your flight.

3. Olympus Digital Camera

I’ve recently changed all my camera equipment to Olympus and just one month in, I’m loving it. My camera bag is x10 lighter by switching from a DSLR camera to a mirrorless Olympus PEN E-PL7 and I’m only shocked I hadn’t thought of it sooner! The camera quality is absolutely fantastic and I can now travel without dragging kilos of extra weight in camera equipment. Sold!

4. DW Watch

I love a good statement watch as much as the next person, but when it comes to travelling I like to keep it simple. Thats why I I love my simple and cleverly understated DW watch – nothing beats simplicity!

5. Frends Headphones

Simplicity is all well and good for the most part, but when I got my hands on my new Frends Headphones last year I knew they would quickly become a staple item. I take them everywhere… and I mean EVERYWHERE!

6. The Twill Backpack

I like to travel with a backpack to throw in my essentials for short day adventures and excursions. It keeps everywhere safe and protected whilst not being a hassle as handbags can sometimes be.

7. Gigi New York Passport Cover

I’m mildly obsessed with my Gigi New York personalised stationary. The Passport cover is just the beginning. I’ve now collected two travel journals, a personalised envelope for my important bits and pieces and a 2015 planner. The list won’t end here.

8. A Good Book (#Girlboss)

I’ll be the first to say that you can go anywhere with just two things: a passport and a good book. The rest is just background noise. Lately I’ve been loving inspirational female stories such as #Girlboss. What are your current faves?

9. Michael Stars Hat

Everyone knows I love a good travel hat – but this is perhaps my current favourite. What a bonus its only $26!!!

10. Classic Travel Wallet by Aspinal of London

Everyone needs a good travel wallet and I’m strongly of the opinion that the Aspinal of London red classic travel wallet is one of the best ones out there on the market. Although it is an investment piece, you’re sure to get the use out of it if you travel frequently.

Over to you – what could you not leave home without on your travels!?

Great list! I always take a pair of Sockwell compression socks for a long flight. They insure that my boots still fit when I land and they’re also super cute.

I’m OBSESSED with that travel wallet. I need to get me one of those! My documents and tickets get all messed up in my purse and this would help so much.

Great camera choice. I was tired of lugging my old Nikon D90 and got the epl5 last year. I love that thing! I have two kids, so packing for them AND camera gear became too much. In addition, I just got the Sony rx100m3 for my everyday camera because it’s super small (it fits right in my jacket pocket!), and it still takes amazing pictures.

Great selection, I love that backpack. A big scarf is a must since it tends to get chilly on the plane (especially for overseas flights). I also like to have a good book, I still need to read Girl Boss!

On my first ever flight overseas my luggage was lost and couldn’t be returned for three days. That experience taught me to always keep some essential clothing items (underwear mostly) in my carry on. Also, after overnight flights it is nice to brush your teeth as soon as you get off the plane, because chances are you will be feeling pretty gross.

    Great tips!
I just bought a Samsung nx300, and it sure is very different from the DSLR. I’m a struggeling getting used to only looking at a screen while taking pictures. But I love the size. I can even put it in my everyday purse! Yay!

    My carry on musts are:
iPod and headphones (I think I’ll have to invest in some Frends headphones – they look great!)
Travel wallet for passport, boarding passes, etc
A smaller wallet for money – heaps easier to carry around once at your destination!
A water bottle (don’t forget to empty before going through security!
A spare change of clothes (in case checked luggage is lost!)
    Face wipes
    Lip balm
    Eye drops
Toothbrush and toothpaste for overnight flights
    A neck pillow
Eye mask – haven’t used on before but I’ll definitely be taking one on my next trip later this week!
A small suitcase and a decent sized handbag to carry it all!

    January 20, 2015 at 8:49 pm

Apart from the obvious like books and iPod, my staples are: big scarf, face wipes, lip balm and flip flops (my feet quite often swell up on planes and then I can’t get my shoes back on!!!)

I’ve been considering switching my tired Nikon D40x DSLR to a mirrorless camera for a little while. They are so perfect for travelling but I’m not sure I’m quite ready to get rid of my DSLR yet!

    January 20, 2015 at 8:25 pm

Definitely agree with the book! I like to take my kindle as well for looooong journeys so I can have a few books all in one.

There are two things i NEED to have in my carry on. For one it’s my iPod and headphones because I can’t fly without music. And secondly I always have to have a pair of cozy socks with me. There’s nothing worse than your feet turning cold.

Yes, yes and yes! Thanks for the mini review of the Olympus, it’s on my wish list! I’ll add to your gorgeous backpack of items a reusable water bottle, healthy snacks and fuzzy socks to accompany the scarf.

Love this post. I’ve been thinking I may need to change my camera for something a bit smaller – my DSLR just seems to take up so much space while travelling and feels a bit much to carry when wandering about. Some good ideas in here for when I go on my next trip, thanks!

Ah as a lover of travel, that Aspinal of London travel wallet speaks to me! I must have it!

I definitely need to check out the Rimowa luggage and PTEN camera! I’d also have to throw my iPad in the mix – I am a magazine, book and movie fiend on flights, and the iPad packs in all my entertainment but hardly weighs anything. As far as other inspirational female stories – I loved the Orphan Train and The Secret Language of Flowers – both so, so good!

Will write a full blog post shortly to share my new camera gear + techniques 🙂 PEN E-PL7 xx

    January 20, 2015 at 2:08 pm

Great list of things! I love using a mirrorless camera for the same reason, it’s very light weight and easy to carry around everyday. I really been eying the Olympus cameras for an upgrade, but still considering it.

I love this post. Having headphones for a plane ride is an absolute must. I love my Bose headphone because they diminish all the airplane noise. I would also suggest giant fizzy socks since planes can get pretty chilly!

    January 20, 2015 at 1:53 pm

I am TOTALLY with you on the oversized scarf and backpack! I wrote a whole post devoted to my scarf and backpack. A traveler must.

I had no idea Michael Stars did hats. Love it! I have several Stars shirts, they are the best. :o)

How good is the Olympus PEN? I have the E-PL7 and it is rad, but buying the OMD-EM10 for my move to London!

I would also add a good hydrating moisturiser, eye drops, hair ties, socks and sometimes compression leggings (no dead legs, thank you).
